Our Story
We made TrekBoard because it seemed like nobody else would.
Laptops aren't really made for laps. In 2016 I was looking for a laptop desk I could use for traveling--something that would slip into my bag and disappear until I needed it. I looked everywhere at retail and online. Know what I found? Nothing. All the laptop desks I could find were these big, bulky things with foam cushions, decks like an aircraft carrier, and a bunch of useless features. They weighed in at a couple pounds, and there was no way I was going to carry those around.
So I found a nice piece of laminated wood--the really thin stuff they use to make ornaments and things with lasers--and I cut myself out a travel-oriented laptop board. My wife liked it, so I made another for her. And we happily used those two pre-TrekBoards for years!
About a year ago my sons absconded those first two devices away, and I thought, "Hey, everyone seems to like these things. I wonder if we could make 'em better, and commercialize this?" I started experimenting with a bunch of materials. Then I found an aluminum composite material that had the perfect material properties: Aluminum to spread out the heat, polymer core to keep most of it off your legs. And, bonus: This stuff could be printed on both sides. Cool!
I made a few prototypes, and everyone LOVED 'em. So we started assembling a team to bring it to market, and worked through several prototype rounds. Wow, for such a simple product concept there were really a lot of considerations. But our small team have brought products to market before, and we knew at least some of the pitfalls to avoid, and challenges to expect. It's been some work, sure. But here we are, a year later--and TrekBoard is launched!
TrekBoard is everything I wanted from the start: Minimal, beautiful, travels well. We're so grateful to all our early supporters who answered our tentative, "Is this an okay idea?" with a resounding, "Heck, yeah!" You've been patient while we mapped out the market and got our little factory put together, and we're super proud to get TrekBoards into your hands!
